The biggest high tech news to hit the road today was of course VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/)’s $420M acquisition of SpringSource (http://www.springsource.com/) , a California based open source company. SpringSource ‘s open source Java application platform along with its acquisition related palette of Tomcat web server and Hyperic management tools, gives it a complete platform to build, run and manage Java applications.
It is clear that , with Spring under its belt, VMware wants to push its envelope beyond the virtualization trademark by hoping to get a better handle on application-specific requirements to build on a cloud platform .VMware has announced that it intends to use the SpringSource acquisition to accelerate virtualization of cloud offerings for corporate customers. It also said that it would continue to support SpringSource's open source model .The plan seems to be to develop integrated Platform as a Service solutions that can be hosted at customer data centers or by cloud service providers. These products will allow users to build new enterprise and Web applications, as well as run and manage them in vSphere-based internal or external clouds that can also host and manage their existing applications. Spring source can no doubt be VMware's powerful window to the increasingly influential world of Open source developers. The fact that this is VMware's biggest acquisition to date is testimonial to the fact that it thinks so as well.
