OPEN SOURCE web browser outfit Mozilla has a released a developer preview prototype of its Open Web Apps Store.

The Open Web Apps store was first announced at the same time as Google's Chrome Store (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1735168/google-launch-chrome-store). The Chrome Store is due to launch some time next month but Mozilla is giving developers a hands-on look at its Open Web Apps Store first.

Mozilla Labs programmer Lloyd Hilaiel ran a five minute presentation video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBFVrmyald4&feature=player_embedded) on the company's proposal for an Open Web Apps Eco-system.

"The void that exists between traditional desktop software and web applications is what has motivated us to launch a new experiment in to what we call Open Web Apps," said Hilaiel.

In explaining what Open Web Apps are, Hilaiel said, "they are discoverable, linkable and fuelled by the technologies of the web: HTML, Javascript and CSS."

While Hilaiel was running his Youtube video, Mozilla's Jay Sullivan put up a blog-post (http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2010/10/19/prototype-of-an-open-web-app-ecosystem/) about Open Web Apps.

"Today, we are releasing technical documentation of the proposed system and a developer preview prototype that allows you to install, manage and launch Web apps in any modern desktop or mobile browser (Firefox 3.6 and later, Firefox for mobile, Internet Explorer 8, Chrome 6, Safari 5, Opera 10 and WebKit mobile)," Sullivan wrote.

The apps can be free or paid for, installed to a dashboard within your mobile or desktop web browser, or to your native OS desktop or mobile home screen.

The apps can be managed on Mozilla's HTML5 dashboard that runs on just about anything. It lets users launch the apps, which Hilaiel said are, "little more than existing web applications with just a small amount of metadata."
