SOFTWARE MONOPOLIST Microsoft has signed up with Cloud.com (http://www.cloud.com/) to provide integration and support of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V to the Openstack project (http://www.opensourcegroups.com/showthread.php?t=1588&highlight=openstack).

Openstack is an open source cloud computing platform that makes it look like the lion is lying down with the lamb. Okay, it might also be looking up lamb recipes in a cook book, but the Vole appears to be definitely doing the lying down thing for now.

Microsoft said that Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V provides organisations and service providers running a mix of Microsoft and non-Microsoft infrastructure with flexibility when using Openstack.

Under the deal the Vole will provide architectural and technical guidance to Cloud.com, while Cloud.com will develop the code to support Openstack on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.

Openstack uses open source software on standard hardware, which allows the software to run on either an individual server in an existing datacentre or on hardware configured as a modular datacentre.

It also uses some virtualisation technology to create and manage large groups of virtual machines.

Cloud.com CEO Sheng Liang said that the demand for cloud computing is continuing to grow and customers want existing technologies such as Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V to work within it
