Novell Inc.(NOVL (http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/NOVL) ), open source software provider posted today a slightly worse-than-expected decline in revenue for its fiscal third quarter, as product sales of identity and security management and systems and resource management software each fell sharply.
Novell accumulated a third-quarter profit of $16.7 million, or 5 cents a share, from a loss of $15.1 million, or 4 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter ended in July fell to $216.1 million from $245.2 million. Excluding special items, Novell said earnings for the quarter were 7 cents a share.
Analysts on average expected Novell to post earnings of 7 cents a share and $216.6 million in revenue, according to data from Thomson Reuters.
Shares of Novell fell nearly 1% to $4.67 in after hours trading following the earnings announcement.
Novell said its open platform solutions software saw $40 million in product revenue in the period, up 22% compared to the period last year. However, identity and security management software product revenue fell 16%, while systems and resource management software product revenue fell 15%.
Workgroup product revenue fell 12%, Novell said.
Novell said it expects "to maintain double-digit non-GAAP operating margins in the full fiscal year 2009, barring unforeseen circumstances."
