Google Inc. (http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/gen/Google_Inc._293A93F1DE694E8C810B1C3734680765.html) said Wednesday that it acquired reCaptcha, an open source technology used to scan archival newspapers and old books that computers find hard to read.

The announcement was made on Google's blog and didn't disclose financial terms.

"Captchas" are the security questions used by Web sites to make sure that a human user is trying to gain access. They require users to type in scrambled and distorted words and numbers.

The New York Times earlier this year reported that Google had been developing its own Captcha technology.

The technology used in reCaptcha was developed at Carnegie Mellon University (http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/gen/Carnegie_Mellon_University_048DC179534241EEB1CFF05 8CA90590F.html)'s School of Computer Science.
