The need to cut costs has certainly created an Open source wave that has favored the Linux OS. Linux has been increasing in popularity in the overall desktop market in recent times, and according to Enterpriselinux News, the economic downturn even though is a dominant factor, is not the sole culprit here. The entry of IBM into the market with its Linux-based Symphony as a viable alternative to Microsoft Office suite, provides businesses the application tools to run on top of a Linux OS. "IBM has some great case studies on call center deployments and straightforward desktop functions where companies have achieved large cost savings," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. "This savings has created the momentum for expansion into mainstream productivity workers… adding up to serious cost savings without a loss of functionality." The linux conversions are more likely to happen in midsized and large companies due to greater web-centric applications. Source: Enterpriselinux News
