Justin Rattner ,Intel CTO, kicked off the Supercomputing 2009 conference. Rattner said that the 3-D internet has the potential to be the "killer app" that can drive growth for High Performance Computers (HPC). He unveiled and demonstrated a new framework called ScienceSim, an open source virtual world that Intel helped to create for SC'09. He discussed examples of ScienceSim being used for applications from fern ecology to fashion research.

The ScienceSim virtual world is a 3D Internet application being developed by the the Supercomputing 2009 conference as a tool for visualization, education, training and scientific discovery. Intel is collaborating with the conference organizers to develop the hardware and simulation infrastructure behind this world. Based on the OpenSim virtual world simulator, ScienceSim also seeks to foster open-source innovation as a means to accelerate the proliferation of 3D Internet technology.
