Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/) has introduced a new tool called SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) that assists MySQL users in migrating to Microsoft's SQL Server database. The SSMA is available as a Community Technology Preview and according to a recent blog post (http://blogs.technet.com/dataplatforminsider/archive/2010/01/11/free-download-microsoft-sql-server-migration-assistant.aspx)on Data Platform Insider from the Microsoft team, "customers and partners reduce the manual effort; as a result the time, cost and risks associated with migrating are significantly reduced."

Microsoft is not the only company to try to lure the relational database management system users who are skeptical about the impending Oracle (http://www.oracle.com/)takeover of MySQL owner Sun Microsystems (http://www.sun.com/). Opensource database vendors such as EnterpriseDB (http://www.enterprisedb.com/)and Ingres (http://www.ingres.com/)have been pretty vocal about finding fresh opportunities among nervous MySQL users . Open source database management company Ingres ‘s latest software release (http://www.opensourcegroups.com/showthread.php?t=337&highlight=ingres), Database 9.3, offers easy migration from not only proprietary databases but also specifically MySQL. The product has added features commonly used in applications written for MySQL to enable a smooth migration including improved accessibility of table procedures from within the query and the support of positional parameter notations that makes database procedure invocation more flexible. A December survey (http://www.opensourcegroups.com/showthread.php?t=577&highlight=group)carried out by the 451 Group revealed that MySQL use is declining and PostgreSQL and MariaDB are directly benefitting from it. Seems like they are not the only ones as the Microsoft blog claims that SSMA has already won favor with Motorola, Simon & Schuster, Sony Ericsson and Artesia among others.

The SQL server migration Assistant version 1.0 is a free download (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0e6168b0-2d0c-4076-96c2-60bd25294a8e&displaylang=en)and offers two choices, a tool for migrating from MySQL to SQL Server 2005 and a tool for migrating to SQL Server 2008 and SQL Azure, Microsoft's cloud offering.
