Drupal (http://drupal.org/) , the wildly popular open source content management system written in PHP , has become quite a force to reckon with and its clout is becoming evident in the corridors of power. The Australian prime minister is the latest addition to Drupal’s long list of elite fans, with his latest venture, a new Drupal site pm.gov.au (http://pm.gov.au/) that serves as a medium for him to communicate with voters through blogs and tweets. Drupal’s impressive portfolio already includes Obama administration’s http://www.recovery.gov/ (http://www.recovery.gov/), French government’s http://www.gouvernement .fr/ (http://www.gouvernement%20.fr/) and New Zealand’s http://beehive.govt.nz (http://beehive.govt.nz)
Web Developer, PreviousNext's founder and partner Owen Lansbury, who has just completed a major new Drupal site for the NSW Government said (http://www.idm.net.au/story.asp?id=16999)"We went through a strong evaluation phase a few years ago to choose Drupal as the best platform to host rich content and publishing. You are now seeing a shift from a few years ago when people payed hundreds of thousands of dollars for a proprietary CMS and Drupal has eaten that market. Drupal has a flexible architecture and provides the ability to easily customise processes. It is a very attractive proposition when you want to jet a project to the market very quickly," said Lansbury.
"Most organisations have the teams in-house to handle ongoing management of a Drupal site, all they need is some PHP, HTML and CSS skills which is good enough for 80-90% of what they need. They can call on us for more complex tasks such as custom module development."
Apart from Drupal’s flexibility, a passion for contributing to the Drupal community seems to be a key motivating factor for many site builders.
