In tune with the increasingly popular trend among proprietary software vendors trying to leverage the popularity of open source to their advantage, Intuit inc (http://www.intuit.com/), provider of financial and tax preparation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_preparation) software and related services launched an open source community today for developers to create online applications for small businesses. The community, at code.intuit.com (http://code.intuit.com) , lets developers build Software-as-a-Service applications that solve small business problems on the Intuit Partner Platform .This is a smart way for Intuit to not only attract a new user base but also firmly tie its existing open source partners that offer SaaS applications to its core realm. Moreover its Federated Application capability helps developers to write applications using any programming language, host them on any cloud infrastructure, connect them to the Intuit Partner Platform and market them to Intuit's small business customers . In this way, Developers would enrich Intuit’s offering keeping things relevant and competitive on the periphery while Intuit’s core products remain closed sourced of course .
