Medsphere (http://medsphere.org/index.jspa) is the provider of OpenVista (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvista/), a commercial open source health care software package. Its COO, Rick Jung recently spoke with Serdar Yegulalp in Information Week about the challenges it has faced in trying to get open source on the doorstep of health care providers and its journey in bringing enormous cost benefits to adapters. An impressive example is quoted of eight hospitals in West Virginia which spent just around $9 million in implementation , about one-tenth of the cost of a commercial competitor (EPIC).
One of the significant points dealt in the interview is how health care for the most part is amazingly still stuck in the dark ages of pulp and paper signifying immense conversion potential in the industry. So the number one challenge OpenVista faces comes more from a lack of advanced digital awareness in the health care sector than from the dominance of any particular proprietary software. Rick stresses the importance of a cost efficient digital infrastructure to meet the imminent needs of a new inflow of crowd in the event of the health care reform getting passed. Interestingly, Open vista also caters to companies like GE and Ford that provide health care for its employees , helping them reduce their health care expenses and partner more efficiently with hospitals and clinics.
